Berceuse vs free white noise apps: what paying gets you

Updated October 3, 20267 min read

Berceuse puts sounds and music in one mixer, adds a baby library and 202 ready-made mixes, and shows no ads. White Noise Lite and Rain Rain are free, well rated and easy to use. Here is what paying adds, and when a free app still fits.

We make Berceuse. We tried to be fair to the free apps: every price and feature below comes from their App Store listings or their makers' sites, checked in October 2026.

The short answer

For most people who want sleep sounds, Berceuse is the better pick: no ads, sounds and music in one mixer, a baby library, ready-made mixes and offline downloads, for $39.99 a year after three days free. A free app like White Noise Lite or Rain Rain still fits if one steady sound is all you need.

Berceuse and free white noise apps side by side

Most people who search for a free white noise app want a steady sound that plays all night. Two long-running apps do that well: White Noise by TMSOFT and Rain Rain Sleep Sounds. Berceuse does that too, and adds music, a baby library and ready-made mixes, with no ads. Here is how they compare. Prices are from the US App Store, checked in October 2026.

Berceuse gives you sounds, music and a baby library in one app

A free white noise app plays a sound. Berceuse lets you build the whole night around it. Rain plays under piano at the volume you want, and nothing on the screen asks for your attention.

  • Sounds and music in one mixer. Layer up to 10 sounds on iPhone (6 on Android), each with its own volume slider. Then add a playlist on its own channel underneath: piano, ambient, jazz, harp, lo-fi and more. You do not need a second app for music.
  • A large library. As of September 2026, Berceuse has more than 900 sounds and music tracks (268 sounds and 636 tracks), in 202 ready-made mixes and 106 playlists. Rain alone comes in about 20 settings, such as a window, a tent, a roof and a forest.
  • Every noise color. White noise (and a warmer white), baby white noise, airplane white noise, pink, brown, grey and velvet noise.
  • A baby library. Womb sounds, heartbeat (including a mother's heartbeat), shushing, a lullaby hum, stroller and car rides, a music box and 10 baby lullaby playlists. Your rain mix and the baby's womb sounds live in the same app.
  • Mixes ready to play. If you do not want to build anything, pick one of 202 ready-made mixes and press play.
  • A timer that fades. Choose 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. The sound fades out over the last 30 seconds instead of stopping hard. Or let it loop all night.
  • Made for a locked phone. It plays in the background and with the screen locked, with lock-screen controls on both platforms.

What White Noise and Rain Rain do well

Both apps have earned their fans, and both are easy to use.

  • White Noise lets you pay once. White Noise Lite is free with ads. White Noise costs $0.99 and Pro $2.99, one-time, with no subscription. TMSOFT lists a Mix Pad, a timer, alarms and offline play.
  • White Noise Baby has cry detection. On iOS it costs $0.99 once, with more than 15 sounds, 10 classical lullabies, a fade timer, no ads and a cry-detection monitor.
  • Rain Rain is generous for free. More than 50 HD sounds play with no time limit, in a mixer with a volume for each sound and a fade timer. The free app shows a small banner ad.
  • Both are well loved. On the US App Store, White Noise Lite has 4.8 stars from about 276,000 ratings, and Rain Rain 4.8 stars from about 137,000.

What $39.99 a year gets you with Berceuse

Berceuse costs $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US. Local prices vary. It starts with three days free, and you can cancel any time in your app store's settings. There is no free tier, but before you pay you can browse and search the whole library, hear 10-second previews and start building a mix.

For that price, you get:

  • No ads, ever. No tracking and no analytics SDK either. The app collects only your email, a user id and your purchase history, to run the app.
  • Music and sounds together. More than 900 sounds and music tracks, mixed your way.
  • The baby library and ready-made mixes. Womb sounds, shushing and lullabies, plus 202 mixes ready to play.
  • Siri on iPhone. Say "Play rain on Berceuse" or "Stop Berceuse in 30 minutes" (iOS 17 or later).
  • Six languages. English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German. The app language can differ from your phone's.
  • Offline downloads. Download mixes and playlists, and they play offline, in the car or on a plane.

For comparison, Rain Rain Premium costs about $29.99 to $35.99 a year, and its sound packs cost $4.99. Berceuse costs a little more, and the music playlists and the baby library come with it.

Why we think Berceuse is the better choice over a free white noise app

  • Music and sounds together. A playlist plays under your sounds in the same mixer, so you do not need a second app for music.
  • Nothing on the screen but your mix. No ads, no banners, no tracking.
  • One app for your nights and the baby's. Womb sounds, shushing and lullabies sit next to your own rain mix.
  • Fast to start. Pick one of 202 ready-made mixes, or ask Siri on iPhone. Lock-screen controls work on both platforms.
  • Ready for travel. Downloaded mixes play offline, for up to 30 days between subscription checks.

Who should still pick a free white noise app

A free app can be enough. Pick one if:

  • You want one steady sound and no music. White Noise Lite or Rain Rain will play white noise or rain all night. Rain Rain gives you the bigger free mixer.
  • You would rather pay once than subscribe. White Noise ($0.99) or White Noise Pro ($2.99) removes the ads for good.
  • You want cry detection on iPhone. White Noise Baby has it. Berceuse never uses the microphone.
